Speaking at the Innovation and Development of Cities Summit recently, Sri Lankan Ambassador to China Dr. Palitha Kohona said that at least a million Chinese tourists are expected to travel to Sri Lanka. He made this statement at the summit attended by Chinese tour groups, tour operators, and environmental NGOs. The Ambassador further elaborated on Sri Lanka’s green credentials such as its vast forest cover, the 7,000-odd wild elephants, the highest concentration of leopards in Asia, the 26 species of whales off our shores, including the giant blue whale. During his summit speech, Dr. Kohona emphasised that Sri Lanka will rely on renewables for 70% of its energy needs by 2030 and that the country has stopped the importation of chemical fertilisers while banning the use of certain popular varieties of plastic. Caissa Travel Group, one of the top five travel groups in China, made a firm commitment to the Sri Lankan Ambassador to make its best efforts to send one million tourists to Sri Lanka when travel restrictions are lifted.
