100-day NIE prog. to cover ‘essentials’ only

09 Nov 2021

By Buddhika Samaraweera The National Institute of Education (NIE) has prepared a programme to cover the essential parts of the existing syllabi of all grades within 100 days after the reopening of classes for all grades, taking into account the impact caused to education by the Covid-19 pandemic situation, related school closures, and other disruptions, The Morning learnt. Speaking to The Morning, Education Reforms, Open Universities, and Distance Learning Promotion State Ministry Secretary Dr. Upali Sedara said that under this programme, essential parts of the existing syllabi will be covered, noting that such parts have already been identified by the NIE. “It is planned to implement this programme as soon as all grades are reopened. Accordingly, this will run until March 2022. The programme was designed by taking into account the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on education in both 2020 and 2021. All grades in all schools will be benefited through this,” he added. When queried as to how this programme would be implemented, Dr. Sedara said that instructions have already been given to the provincial directors of education and it is hoped to implement it through them. “Provincial directors of education will advise zonal and divisional directors of education in this regard, who will then direct the principals and teachers to implement it,” he said. Meanwhile, the State Ministry of Education Reforms, Open Universities, and Distance Learning Promotion and the NIE had earlier planned to commence a home-based learning programme covering all the provinces from August 2021. At the time, Dr. Sedara had told The Morning that under this programme, a series of weekly activities will be provided to students in each grade with the relevant activities to be made available to students in the format of printed copies. He further said that the activities that would be given for Grades 10, 11, 12, and 13 would be aimed at the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Ordinary Level (O/L) and Advanced Level (A/L) examinations. When questioned about the progress of this programme, Dr. Sedara said that it too is currently being implemented.
