Cabinet has approved a proposal to obtain an additional loan grant of USD 100 million under the Strategic Preparation & Response to Covid-19 Programme with the funds to be utilised to purchase 14 million doses of Pfizer vaccines. This comes after The State Pharmaceutical Corporation said yesterday (21) that vaccines have been procured to administer the booster shot to the Sri Lankan population. During a press brief Prasanna Gunasena, Chairman of State Pharmaceuticals, mentioned that all Sri Lankan citizens above the age of 18 years would be given a booster dose of the anti-covid vaccine, if in case they have lost resistance to the virus after the initial two doses. Gunasena stated that a third booster dose has been secured and would be available for administration by mid October or early September to the total population if needed, confirming that this is based on the recommendation of the ACCD , and the approval to start the booster vaccine in due course will be obtained. Additionally, He confirmed that only vaccines manufactured using RNA technology would be administered as the booster shot and discussions with Pfizer Bio-Tech have proved successful, ensuring 14 million doses of the Pfizer Bio-Tech vaccine would be provided to vaccinate the 60% of the population this number of vaccines would cover.
