103rd SL Tennis Nationals: US-based Savit Boys' U-18 Champion

Eighth-seed Savit Weerasinghe clinched the Boys’ Under-18 Singles title and emerged the newest Sri Lanka junior national champion at the 103rd Tennis Nationals, on Saturday, 25 August, at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association hard courts, Green Path, Colombo. Weerasinghe is a player based in USA. Boys’ U-18 is the only age-group event which is completed so far in this year’s Junior and Senior Tennis Nationals held simultaneously at the same venue. The tournament is organised by the Sri Lanka Tennis Association and scheduled to go on till Sunday, 2 September. Savit beat sixth-seed Chathurya Nilaweera 6/1, 3/6, 6/2 in the U-18 finals. In his semi-finals, Weerasinghe beat second-seed Vibuda Wijebandara 7-5, 6-0. Nilaweera, meanwhile, in his semis thrashed Ashen Silva 6/3, 6/2. In July, when the same players, Savit and Chathurya, met at the finals of the 103rd Colombo Championship clay-court U-18 finals, then-unseeded Weerasinghe won easily 6/2, 6/1. Nationals Savings Bank is the main sponsor of this year’s Nationals with Dialog and Brown & Company Plc are co sponsors. The International Tennis Federation certified ball, ‘Dunlop Fort Elite’, is the official ball for the tournament. Ralhum Trading Co. Ltd. is the sole agents for 'Dunlop'. Dharaka Ellawala, an ITF Silver Badge official, is the Referee in this year’s Tennis Nationals.
