11 weather-related deaths in two weeks

BY Buddhika Samaraweera  At least 11 persons have died in incidents related to inclement weather conditions, since 27 October to date, with the first landslides-related deaths being reported yesterday (9), according to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC). In total, from 27 October till yesterday, there have been five deaths due to drowning, four deaths due to landslides, and two deaths due to lightning strikes. According to the data available on the DMC website as of 6 a.m. yesterday, the landslide deaths were due to two landslides that had occurred in the Rambukkana and Alawwa areas. The Disaster Management Officer of the Rambukkana Divisional Secretariat office told The Morning that a house in the Dombemada area had been completely submerged due to a landslide, killing three people, including a mother, her eight-year-old daughter, and a 13-year-old cousin. Another person who was at the house has been admitted to the District Hospital in Rambukkana and then transferred to the Teaching Hospital in Kegalle. The other person who was killed in a landslide in Alawwa has been identified as a 23-year-old female, who was working as a nurse in a private hospital in Colombo. Her mother and brother, who have also been at home, have survived.  In addition, as of 6 a.m. yesterday, a total of 7,167 persons belonging to 1,836 families have been affected due to the inclement weather conditions. Several property damages have also been reported including two complete damages and 89 partial damages. The DMC also stated that 222 persons belonging to 58 families are staying in seven safety locations islandwide. Meanwhile, the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has issued landslides warnings for a total of 10 districts, given the rainfall exceeding 75 millimetres (mm) in many of the areas. Accordingly, the NBRO has issued level two (amber) landslide warnings to the Elpitiya and Baddegama Divisional Secretariat Divisions (DSDs) in the Galle District; the Bulathsinhala, Palindanuwara, Agalawatte, and Matugama DSDs in the Kalutara District; the Ganga Ihala Korale DSD in the Kandy District; the Aranayake, Bulathkohupitiya, Mawanella, Rambukkana, Dehiowita, and Kegalle DSDs in the Kegalle District; the Narammala DSD in the Kurunegala District; and the Ayagama, Ratnapura, Kalawana, Eheliyagoda, and Ratnapura DSDs in the Ratnapura District. This is a total of 19 DSDs in six districts. In addition, the NBRO has issued level one (yellow) landslide warnings for a total of 38 DSDs in the said 10 districts, namely, the Ella and Passara DSDs in the Badulla District; the Seethawaka and Padukka DSDs in the Colombo District; the Yakkalamulla, Neluwa, Nagoda, Akmeemana, and Galle Four Gravets DSDs in the Galle District; the Ingiriya, Walallawita, Dodangoda, and Horana DSDs in the Kalutara District; the Yatinuwara, Udunuwara, Doluwa, Harispattuwa, Gangawata Korale, Pasbage Korale, and Udapalatha DSDs in the Kandy District; the Deraniyagala, Ruwanwella, Warakapola, Ruwanwella, and Yatiyantota DSDs in the Kegalle District; the Rideegama, Mawathagama, and Mallawapitiya DSDs in the Kurunegala District; the Rattota and Ukuwela DSDs in the Matale District; the Walapane, Hanguranketha, Ambagamuwa, and Kotmale DSDs in the Nuwara Eliya District; and the Kuruwita, Elapatha, Nivitigala, and Kiriella DSDs in the Ratnapura District. During the landslides early warning period, the NBRO advised the public to pay attention to the development of cracks on the ground and ground subsidence, the slanting of trees, cracks in the floors and walls of buildings which are built at slopes, the sudden appearance of springs, and emerging muddy water.
