111 new police stations since March 2020

BY Buddhika Samaraweera The Police noted that a total of 111 new police stations have been established islandwide since March, 2020, under the Government’s programme to establish new police stations with the aim of bringing the Police closer to the people. Speaking to The Morning, Police Media Spokesma Senior Superintendent of Police and Attorney-at-Law Nihal Thalduwa said that the Government had launched a programme in March 2020 to establish 209 new police stations covering all provinces. He added that 111 of them have been opened so far. He further added that the most recent police station built under this programme was opened on Sunday (27) in the Ethgala area in Gampola, elaborating that the establishment of the remaining 98 police stations would be completed soon. “The nearest police station to certain villages is several kilometres away. Therefore, people are reluctant to go to the Police. Hence, the programme to expand the police stations network was launched with the aim of enhancing the relationship between the people and the Police,” he added. He opined that by increasing the number of police stations, it will definitely be possible to provide a better service to the people and to reduce crime.  The Police Department, which consists of 43 territorial divisions and 67 functional divisions, is mainly responsible for enforcing criminal and traffic law. There are 605 police stations with more than 84,000 officers at present.
