14,100 dengue cases recorded in 2021

20 Oct 2021

  • 44.4% from WP; over 3,600 cases from Colombo
BY Dinitha Rathnayake A total of 14,100 suspected dengue cases were reported to the Epidemiology Unit from all over the island from January 2021 up to now. Approximately, 44.4 % of the dengue cases for this year were reported from the Western Province (WP). This situation warrants the extensive and regular removal of possible mosquito breeding sites from the environment, along with strengthened patient education on the management of fever which results in a relatively low mortality. A total of 31,162 suspected dengue cases were reported in 2020. It is very important, according to the Epidemiological Unit, to seek medical attention in the event of fever and to do the relevant laboratory investigations by at least day three of the illness. The total number of dengue cases reported from the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) area is 918, while from other areas of Colombo it is 2,692. The highest number of cases was reported in the month of July. A total of 184 cases have been reported so far in the month of October. There are two peak seasons for dengue transmission in Sri Lanka: From October to December and from May to July.
