18th Asian Games begins on Saturday in Indonesia

A strong contingent of 177 athletes plus 78 officials, forming a delegation of 255 individuals, will be there representing Sri Lanka when the 18th Asian Games will begin on Saturday, August 18, in the Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang. The event will go on till 2nd September. Sri Lanka is to take part in 30 sport disciplines with kabaddi (30 athletes), hockey (23), baseball (22), athletics (18), volleyball - indoor (18), rugby 7s (16), basketball (10) and boxing (10) featuring the most number of athletes. The other sports include aquatics, archery, badminton, beach volleyball, canoeing, eSports, golf, gymnastics (artistic & rhythmic), judo, karate, roller skating, rowing, sailing, squash, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis, triathlon, weightlifting, wrestling and wushu. Out of those eSports, a form of competition using video games, is introduced for the first time in Asian Games, only as a demonstration sport. There will be one Sri Lankan competing in the discipline. eSports will be made a medal sport only the next episode of the Games, in 2022 in Hangzhou, China.
