20,000 cannabis plants destroyed, several others arrested for drug offences

During a raid conducted by the Special Task Force in the Unakanda area of Hambegamuwa yesterday (02), 20,000 cannabis plants were destroyed. Police Spokesman Senior DIG Ajith Rohana stated that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the cannabis cultivation. Meanwhile, the Police Narcotics Bureau (PNB) arrested a 39 year old suspect along with 100 grams of Ice and 5 grams of heroin in the Bandaragama area. Senor DIG Rohana notes that the suspect was found to be in possession of 9 million rupees.  Further investigations revealed that the sum of money was generated through drug trafficking. The suspect is to be produced before the Bandaragama magistrate today (03) and the PNB intends to obtain a detention order on the suspect for a period of 7 days. In addition, the Jaffna Divisional Crime Detective Bureau has arrested 2 suspects found to be in possession of 12 grams of heroin, 155,000 rupees and 3 mobile phones. Senior DIG Rohana notes that these arrests are a part of Sri Lanka Police’s continuing anti narcotic operations.
