20,000 tourism front-liners to be vaccinated

A total of 20,000 front-liners from the tourism sector are set to be vaccinated within the next couple of days, The Morning learnt. Speaking to The Morning yesterday (1), Secretary to the Ministry of Tourism S. Hettiarachchi said that there are around 250,000 individuals involved in the tourism industry. “However, we have requested 50,000 vaccines for the first stage of the vaccination program and 20,000 doses for the current requirement.” According to Hettiarachchi, 20,000 doses have been allocated for the front-liners who are currently working with tourists. “This will be administered to the staff of level one hotels, tourist vehicle drivers, tour operators and guides.” With the vaccination process, tourists feel safe to travel Sri Lanka, Hettiarachchi added. Sri Lanka has administered at least 441,976 doses of Covid-19 vaccines so far. During the course of last week, it was reported that Sri Lanka averaged about 23,106 doses administered each day. According to the Epidemiology Unit of the Ministry of Health, there have been 83,242 infections and 471 Coronavirus related deaths reported in the country since the pandemic began.
