200,000 Sputnik V this month

05 Apr 2021

The first stock of 200,000 doses of Russian Sputnik V is set to arrive in Sri Lanka in April, making it the third brand of Covid-19 vaccine to arrive in the Island. The vaccine’s manufacturer Gamaleya institute has provided its delivery schedule to the State Pharmaceutical Corporation (SPC) to deliver 13 million Sputnik V doses throughout a period of nine months, said SPC General Manager Dinusha Dassanayake to The Morning on Sunday (4). “The Galameya institute has confirmed that they will deliver 200,000 doses of Sputnik V to vaccinate 100,000 individuals against Covid-19 within the month of April, as a first consignment of the total order of 13 million doses.” The Sputnik V vaccine is administered through the injection of two different adenovirus vectors (rAd26 and rAd5), delivered separately, in a first and second dose, with a gap of 21 days between the two doses. The National Medicines Regulatory Authority (NMRA) granted emergency use registration for the Sputnik V vaccine on 4 March. When contacted by The Morning, NMRA CEO Dr. Kamal Jayasinghe said on 23 March that registration has been granted for both doses. On 23 March, the Cabinet approved a proposal made by the Minister of Health Pavithra Wanniarachchi to purchase 7 million Sputnik V vaccines from Russia using an allocation of $ 69.65 million, upon the recommendation of the Cabinet-appointed price negotiation committee to purchase the vaccine at $ 9.95 per dose. When inquired by The Morning regarding administration of the vaccine, Ministry of Health Epidemiology Unit Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said that a plan for the administration of the vaccine would be prepared when the vaccine is being delivered. “We have not prepared a plan for the administration of the vaccine yet. It would be prepared when we are receiving the stock.” Sri Lanka has so far received 1,264,000 doses of Oxford Astra Zeneca Covishield doses from the Serum Institute of India and a consignment of 600,000 doses of Sinopharm arrived in Sri Lanka on 31 March as a donation from the Chinese Government. The vaccine began being administered to Chinese nationals in the country from yesterday (5) in four locations in Colombo, Kandy, Hambantota, and Puttalam, as it awaits a Health Ministry decision to be administered on locals.
