2020 general election: EC opts for cardboard ballot boxes

30 Jun 2020

By Skandha Gunasekara The Elections Secretariat will be utilising cardboard ballot boxes for the upcoming general election due to its cost-effectiveness over wooden boxes. Elections Secretariat Chief Accountant G.R.A.K. Gamlath told The Morning that cardboard ballot boxes were used for the 2019 presidential election, and could hold more votes. “Wooden boxes can only accommodate around 500-600 ballot papers while cardboard boxes can hold up to 2,500,” he said. He noted that cardboard boxes came in small, medium, and large sizes. “We expect to buy around 13,000 ballot boxes for the upcoming parliamentary election,” he said. He noted that cardboard ballot boxes would also cost far less in comparison to its wooden counterpart. “We expect it will cost around Rs. 12-13 million to get the cardboard ballot boxes for the general election. Wooden boxes would have cost more.”
