The Election Commission (EC) is due to meet today (3) to decide on the future of the parliamentary election, and maintains it would require 60-70 days to hold the 2020 general election.

EC member Prof. Ratnajeevan Hoole told The Morning that a meeting would be held to decide on when to hold the election.

“The Commission will meet and decide on a date for the election, now that the Supreme Court (SC) has dismissed the cases challenging the election (date),” Prof. Hoole said.

He also noted that after receiving the clearance from health authorities, 60-70 days would be needed to conduct the election.

The SC yesterday (2) overruled preliminary objections and refused to grant leave to proceed with all fundamental rights (FR) applications challenging the date to hold the election.

The SC heard seven FR applications challenging the date of the election over a period of 10 days.
