By Sarah Hannan A total of nine candidates have submitted declarations of their assets and liabilities to the March 12 Movement and Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL). The March 12 Movement pointed out that the candidates contesting the forthcoming parliamentary election have the potential to show that they are qualified to represent Parliament as members of parliament (MPs), as well as to expose themselves to society as being free from bribery and corruption by declaring their assets and liabilities. The March 12 Movement said that it was ready to publicise and appreciate the asset and liability declarations, and that the candidates would be able to reveal themselves to the public as transparent individuals. Candidates Dr. Ashu Marasinghe (United National Party [UNP]), Eran Wickramarathne (Samagi Jana Balawegaya [SJB]), Mylvaganam Thilagarajah (SJB National List), Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe (SJB), Premnath C. Dolawatte (Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna [SLPP]), Prof. Charith Giragama (UNP), and Chathurika Jayalath (UNP) had handed over their asset and liability declarations to the March 12 Movement during the ceremony held on 21 July. The MPs who were present at the event said that the decision of the March 12 campaign to make public the declarations of assets and liabilities of the candidates was a very important and timely one. They also signed a document confirming that they would abide by the March 12 Movement's criteria after becoming MPs. Meanwhile, Ranjan Ramanayake (SJB) and Dayasiri Jayasekara (Sri Lanka Freedom Party [SLFP]) had submitted their asset and liability declarations to TISL for the year 2019 and 2020, which is accessible through their site https://www.tisrilanka.org/MPassets/
