09 Jul 2020

*No invites for foreign election monitors *Covid-19 pandemic conditions still severe By Skandha Gunasekara The Election Commission (EC) will not be inviting international monitors for the forthcoming general election, The Morning learnt. EC Deputy Commissioner S.A. Achchudan told The Morning that it had been decided not to bring down foreign monitors. “The Covid-19 pandemic conditions are still too severe to have any international monitors brought down.” However, he said that independent international election watchdog groups such as the Asia Network for Free Elections (ANFREL) would be arriving of their own accord. “Some election observers from independent groups will be arriving and we will be co-ordinating with them, but we have not invited them and we will bear no costs on their behalf,” Achchudan said.
