2020 general election: Polling time allocated for quarantined individuals

16 Jul 2020

Individuals who have been placed under self-quarantine due to the threat of Covid-19 will be permitted to cast their votes between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. on election day, Election Commission (EC) Chairman Mahinda Deshapriya said. Deshapriya made these observations to the media following a discussion with officials engaged in election work at the Jaffna District Secretariat. “We are taking all the necessary precautions to hold the election on 5 August. There has not been any discussion about postponing the election. We cannot drag this any longer and there has to be a functioning parliament to ensure democracy.  “Therefore, we call on the public as well as the politicians to follow the health guidelines.  “We also urge the health authorities to publish the health guidelines, otherwise we will find it difficult to conduct the polls without it,” Deshapriya has said. He has explained that the people in self-quarantine will be allocated time between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. on election day to cast their votes. “If people in quarantine centres are brought to booths to cast their votes, we hope that they are not infected by Covid-19,” the EC Chairman has further noted.
