20A must be submitted for public consultation: NMSJ

11 Sep 2020

The proposed 20th Amendment to the constitution must be submitted for inclusive and open consultation, the National Movement for Social Justice said yesterday (10). The National Movement for Social Justice, founded by the late Ven. Muduluwawe Sobitha Thero, expressed its position on the proposed 20th Amendment at a press conference in the presence of Buddhist monks and clergy of other religions, eminent personalities and the Former Speaker of the Parliament, Karu Jayasuriya. They stressed on the need to conduct broad and inclusive consultation under the theme of “One Country, One Law” so as not to instill power in the President alone. The consequences of the loss of independent institutions were also brought to attention, such as the potential loss of a free and fair election system after the reform has been imposed. They stated that the removal of Procurement and Audit commissions would further the corruption in the country. NMSJ also expressed their opposition to the President’s proposal that allows individuals with dual citizenship to hold positions in the Parliament.
