20A to the Constitution | UNP to launch agitation campaign

22 Sep 2020

Newly elected United National Party (UNP) Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene plans to unite the forces of youth, women, intellectuals, artistes, professionals, workers, and the Buddhist clergy affiliated with the UNP to resist what it terms the Government’s autocratic march. The women’s force will be led by the Lak Vanitha Front, while the youth force will be led by the National Youth Front, the UNP announced in a press release yesterday (21). Several programmes are to be organised by these collectives to create awareness about the dangers of the introduction of the 20th Amendment, environmental destruction, attacks on the rule of law and parliamentary democracy, stifling people’s freedom, intimidation and imprisonment of journalists, tax hikes, burdening the public through the lack of price controls, and the abolishment of price formulas and depriving consumers the resultant concessions. Meanwhile, the Eksath Bhikku Peramuna will organise programmes to create awareness among the Buddhist clergy in Sri Lanka on the “constitutional crisis” in the country, in addition to bribery, drug trafficking, and other crimes.
