21 arrests on day of protests

21 Jun 2022

  • Police arrest ‘GotaGoGama’ protestors for ‘obstruction’
  • All arrestees granted bail
BY Ruwani Fonseka The Police yesterday (20) arrested 21 suspects, including a Buddhist monk, four females, and another 16 males, for allegedly obstructing the entrances to the Ministry of Finance, before they were granted bail by the Fort Magistrate later in the day. The Police Media Unit, in a press release, claimed that this protest had resulted in officials of the Finance Ministry, Presidential Secretariat, and the Treasury facing various difficulties in reporting for duties and essential services.  A press release by the PM’s office claimed that the meeting between the Secretary to the Ministry of Finance and the IMF representatives who had arrived in the country yesterday had been delayed due to the blockade at the entrance to the Ministry. “Protestors blocked the Finance Ministry, which delayed the Treasury Secretary attending the IMF meeting that was held at the PM’s office,” it said. Speaking to The Morning, Police Spokesperson Senior Superintendent of Police and Attorney-at-Law Nihal Thalduwa said that the protestors had been an obstruction to officials at the Ministry and Secretariat, based on which they were arrested. “Protestors can stage their protests at the relevant protest sites, but they have obstructed a Government office, and were thus arrested. Statements are currently being recorded at the Peliyagoda Police Station, and they will be produced before the court,” said Thalduwa yesterday. Meanwhile, posts circulating on social media yesterday stated that lawyers attached to the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) had arrived at said Police Station to represent the arrestees. However, BASL President Saliya Peiris told The Morning that the lawyers were not representing the BASL, but were individual lawyers who wanted to serve the arrestees. “The lawyers who had arrived at the Peliyagoda Police Station are not representing the BASL, but they are lawyers who want to represent the arrestees out of their own free will. These lawyers have not been sent by the BASL,” he mentioned. The “GotaGoGama” protest demanding the immediate resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa completed its 73rd day, yesterday. The Occupy Galle Face protest started on 9 April 2022, and has been going on daily, despite adverse weather and the 9 May attacks on the protest site.
