BY Ruwani Fonseka 21 protesters who had obstructed the entrances to the Finance Ministry and Presidential Secretariat have been arrested and statements are currently being recorded from them at the Peliyagoda police station, The Morning learns. Speaking to The Morning, Police Spokesperson SSP Nihal Thalduwa said that the protesters had been an obstruction to officials at the Ministry and Secretariat and based on that, they were arrested. "Protesters can stage their protests at the relavent protest sites, but they have obstructed a government office and based on that they were arrested. Statements are currently being recorded at the Peliyagoda police station and they will be produced before the court today," said Thalduwa. Meanwhile, posts circulating on social media stated that the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) lawyers have been arriving at the police station to represent the arrestees, whereas BASL President Saliya Peiris told The Morning that the lawyers were not representing the BASL but were individual lawyers who wanted to serve the arrestees. "The lawyers who had arrived at the Peliyagoda police station are not representing the BASL, but they are lawyers who want to represent the arrestees out of their own free will. These lawyers have not been sent to the police station by the BASL," he mentioned. Earlier today, unrest broke out in front of the Presidential Secretariat when protesters blocked all entrances to the Secretariat and the Finance Ministry. Police were called in to control the situation, along with water cannons and police barricades. The Galle Road from the Secretariat until past Temple Trees has been barricaded by the Police.
