12 Sep 2021

The Covid-19 vaccination process for 12 year olds and above will be conducted in three stages, the Sri Lanka College of Pediatricians (SLCP) noted. Due to begin in the last week of September, SLCP member pediatrician Dr. R. M. Surantha Perera stated that children with chronic diseases will be vaccinated under the first phase of the vaccination drive. “In the first phase, we hope to give the vaccine to children with complications. In the second phase, we will give the vaccine to A/L and O/L students. In the third stage, with everyone’s agreement, the vaccine will be given to the rest of the children, especially those over 12 years of age,” stated Dr Perera Dr Perera appealed to the parents of children, over the age of 12 years, with chronic diseases to vaccinate their children as soon as it is their turn. He went on to say that the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines were the vaccine of choice in the West, out of which the Pfizer vaccine was considered popular. Children above the age of 12 years in Sri Lanka will be receiving the USA manufactured Pfizer vaccine, which has been tried and tested widely. Many Americans have received the Pfizer vaccine with very little side effects. Dr. Perera concluded by saying, “According to the currently available stock of vaccines, it is not an issue to vaccinate children with complications, because we need only about 60,000 to 70,000 doses. All we have to do as professionals is take advantage of the opportunity to create a system and give the best to our children,”
