The Serum Institute of India (SII) has confirmed the delivery of a consignment of 500,000 doses of the Oxford–AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine to Sri Lanka on Thursday (25) night, according to Acting Minister of Health Prof. Channa Jayasumana.
The consignment has been ordered by Sri Lanka’s State Pharmaceuticals Corporation (SPC), Jayasumana told the media yesterday (22).
The SPC has signed the order with SII for 10 million doses of the vaccine. This agreement had been approved by the Attorney General last week.
Oxford-AstraZeneca’s Covishield is being manufactured by Pune-based Serum Institute. The SII has collaborated with Oxford University and pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca to make the vaccine.
Sri Lanka began vaccinating healthcare workers and frontline security forces personnel on 29 January after Sri Lanka received a stock of 500,000 AstraZeneca Covishield vaccines from the Government of India. Sri Lanka still awaits vaccines from the World Health Organisation (WHO) COVAX Facility for 20% of its population.
