61 mobile phones have been ceased during a raid within the Negombo Prison, according to Commissioner General of Prisons Thushara Upuldeniya .
President Gotabya Rajapksa earlier this month during a meeting with Prison Department officials said certain underworld crimes, drug mafia and terrorist activities are operated from prisons and must be brought to an end.
He said the use of mobile phones within prison premises should be completely eradicated.
Last week several unauthorised devices including mobile phones were uncovered in the prison cell of notorious drug kingpin “Kanjipani Imran” at the Boossa Prison in Galle.
The illegal equipment was discovered during a special search operation carried out by the Special Task Force (STF) at the prison.
The STF said the contraband had been concealed in the ceiling of Kanjipani Imran’s cell. Accordingly, a smartphone, a normal mobile phone, two SIM cards, a phone charger, and a hands-free device have been seized.
