06 Jul 2020

Eight suspects in the Sunil Jayawardena murder case have been further remanded until the 17th of July by the Nugegoda Additional Magistrate Tissa Wijeratne. Jayawardena, the Chairman of the Lanka Self Employed Professionals’ National Three-Wheeler Federation, was assaulted to death on the 10th of June  following a heated argument that broke out in front of a leasing company. He had reportedly appeared for a three-wheeler driver whose vehicle had been seized for defaulting leasing payments. Jayawardena had recently posted a video on social media requesting President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to take action against the ‘Leasing Mafia’. He claimed that most of leasing companies were using the underworld to seize three-Wheelers. He was to contest the August 5 general elections as an independent candidate. Eight employees of the leasing company were arrested over the incident and were produced before court.
