800 containers of essential goods held at Colombo Port: JVP

27 Sep 2021

800 containers carrying essential goods are being held at the Colombo Port as the Government does not have the dollars to release them, Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) General Secretary Tilvin Silva alleged at a media briefing held today (27). While commenting on the Government’s control of the prices of essential goods, Silva drew attention to the several shortages of goods that occurred in the country in the recent past. “We also saw instances where the government themselves intervened and increased the prices of certain goods. There was a garlic scam in the country. Garlic which could have been purchased at about 150 rupees has to be purchased at 250 to 260 rupees in the market at present,” he said Silva also claimed that a group of thieves have banded together with a “family”, and that this group is now holding on to their power. “They are creating opportunities for themselves and their business friends to earn money. The people have been severely affected,” Silva claimed. In conclusion, he stated that the only reason the people have not taken to the streets to protest against this is because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
