This was incidentally the first global medal for Sri Lanka in athletics after 2007. Parami Wasanthi Maristella is from Kuliyapitiya Central School. She won the bronze when she was placed fourth in her category in the cross-country race in Buenos Aires on Monday. She had earlier been placed third in the 2,000 m steeplechase needed to make a repeat performance in the cross-country race to secure a medal. Parami was placed fourth in the cross-country race from among the athletes who took part in the steeplechase. The third-place winner of the cross-country had been ranked well below Parami in the steeplechase and thus made the Sri Lankan athlete clinch the bronze medal. The medals were offered according to placing in both steeplechase and the cross-country at the Youth Olympics. Susanthika Jayasinghe, nicknamed Asian Black Mare, won a bronze medal at the IAAF World Championships in 2007.
