90% of FTZ workers given first dose

11 Jul 2021

By Pamodi Waravita   Approximately 90% of workers at Free Trade Zones (FTZs) around the country – almost 126,000 of the 132,000 eligible workers – have been provided the first dose of the Sinopharm Covid-19 vaccine, according to the Board of Investment (BOI) Head of Zones M.K D. Lawrance. Speaking to The Morning yesterday (11), Lawrence said that the workers in Kandy have received the Sputnik-V vaccine. He further said that 1,600 factories outside the FTZs have also been inoculated with a Covid-19 vaccine.  Meanwhile, 1.4 million doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine are scheduled to arrive in the country next week, most likely on 19 July, but details of the origin of the vaccine doses, their manufacturer, and the exact number of doses expected are yet to be announced.  According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), two versions of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine are produced for emergency use by AstraZeneca-SKBio (from South Korea), and the Serum Institute of India (SII). As of 10 July, Sri Lanka has administered 925,242 first doses and 385,647 second doses of the Covishield brand of the vaccine manufactured by the SII.  Meanwhile, 2 million doses of the Sinopharm vaccine reached the island yesterday (11). Of this vaccine, 2,856,147 first doses and 1,023,128 second doses have been administered to the local populace as of 10 July.  State Minister of Production, Supply, and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals Prof. Channa Jayasumana stated that the country will also receive 1.5 million doses of the Moderna vaccine within the next two weeks from the US.  Commenting to the media yesterday (11), Head of the National Operation Centre for the Prevention of Covid-19 (NOCPCO) Task Force Army Commander Gen. Shavendra Silva said that out of the 26,000 initial stocks of the Pfizer-Biontech Covid-19 vaccine the country received earlier this month, over 3,000 had been administered as the second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine, although that was halted after a day since the country learnt that it will receive more stocks of the AstraZeneca vaccine for the second dose. As such, Gen. Silva said that it has been decided to inoculate students who require the Pfizer-Biontech Covid-19 vaccine to study abroad. A total of 3,881 students have already registered for it, of which about 1,000 have been administered as of 10 July. Accordingly, 6,000 of the 26,000 doses are reserved for students. A majority of the remaining doses will be given to those in the fishing industry in the Mannar District.  The Epidemiology Unit notes that as of 10 July, 11,069 first doses of the Pfizer-Biontech Covid-19 vaccine have been administered so far. Gen. Silva further said that 3,776 students have registered for the Sinopharm vaccine, of which about 1,500 had received the vaccine by 10 July.  A total of 114,795 first doses and 14,464 second doses of the Sputnik-V vaccine have been administered so far.
