A decision on compensating Mahara victims after probes completed: Govt.

01 Dec 2020

The government said today that a decision on compensating those who died during the Mahara Prison unrest would have to be taken after the investigations are completed. Responding to a question during the Cabinet news briefing, Co-Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Udaya Gammanpila said no discussion has been held at the ministerial level in this regard as of yet due to lack of information. “A decision has to be taken after investigation reports are out. Four separate investigations have been launched into the incident by the Prisons Department, the State Ministry, the committee appointed by the Justice Minister and another by the Criminal Investigation Department,” he said.
