The Ministry of Environment directed that liquor companies should charge a deposit of at least Rs. 10 for quarter bottles (185 ml) of liquor to encourage consumers to return the empty bottles and to reduce environmental pollution.
Speaking to The Sunday Morning, Minister of Environment Mahinda Amaraweera said: “We have proposed that a deposit fee should be introduced for the 185 ml bottle from liquor companies, as we found that the irresponsible disposal of such plastic/glass bottles is contributing towards the increasing amount of waste.”
Amaraweera noted that the distilleries are to now come up with a pricing mechanism and an empty bottle collection mechanism to support the Government’s efforts to reduce irresponsible dumping of empty bottles.
During a recent survey done by the Ministry, it was found that about 120 million quarter bottles are produced annually, out of which 18-20 million are used by the liquor industry, from which about 60% is deemed unrecyclable.
Once the distilleries and retailers arrive at an agreement, the Ministry of Environment said that it would enact the deposit charging mechanism. Empty bottle collection will however have to be handled by the distillery owners and the retailers.
Should these terms not be met, the Ministry of Environment would look at banning the quarter bottle usage for liquor in the future, Amaraweera stated.
