A/L and Scholarship Exams postponed

  • Authorities cite syllabi not being covered; Edu Ministry’s Exams Dept. to issue statement soon
By Buddhika Samaraweera The Education Ministry and the Examinations Department are to reschedule the Grade Five Scholarship Examination and the General Certificate of Education (GCE) Advanced Level (A/L) Examination, which were earlier announced to be held in November 2021. Speaking in Parliament yesterday (7), the Education Reforms, Open Universities, and Distance Learning Promotion State Minister Susil Premajayantha said that the Grade Five Scholarship and GCE A/L Examinations should be rescheduled, as the syllabi has not been fully covered due to the closure of schools for a long time with the Covid-19 pandemic situation. “The Grade Five Scholarship and the GCE A/L Examinations scheduled to be held in November 2021 should be postponed for some time and students should be given the opportunity to prepare for them. The syllabi should also be covered and the Education Ministry and the Examinations Department will discuss the matter and issue a definite statement soon," he added. The Grade Five Scholarship and GCE A/L Examinations were earlier scheduled to be held in October 2021 and the then Education Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris said, during late last July, that the two Examinations would be held in November 2021. However, responding to an oral question raised by Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) Government MP Shantha Bandara in Parliament on 5 September, Premajayantha said that there were requests from various parties to postpone the GCE A/L and Grade Five Scholarship Examinations. Accordingly, he said that attention has been paid to this matter. “Out of the 210 school days in 2020, students attended the schools only for 65 days. In the Western Province, it was only on five days that students attended the schools. Therefore, there have been several requests to postpone the Grade Five Scholarship and GCE A/L Examinations and the Government is now paying attention to them,” he stated. He further stated that the situation in the country is totally different from the earlier time during which the dates for these Examinations were decided. “At the time of setting the dates for these Examinations, there was no idea of the number of infections and deaths that would occur due to the third wave of the Covid-19 pandemic,” he noted. Meanwhile, the application deadline for the re-scrutiny of 2020 GCE Ordinary Level Examination results has been set for 25 October, Examinations Commissioner General B. Sanath Pujitha announced yesterday. Students who wish to apply for re-scrutiny can submit applications only through the online process, via the official website or mobile application of the Examinations Department, or the Exam Information Centre. Several trade unions within the education sector, including the Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) and the Ceylon Teachers’ Service Union (CTSU), have also recently claimed that the conducting of the GCE A/L Examination in November this year would not be fair for the students since the relevant syllabus has not been covered in most schools due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation.
