A New Year with a newness

12 Apr 2021

Following traditions blindly has never resulted in anything good or new; and the duty of the humans, or the “most intelligent animals” as some prefer to put it, should be something beyond that. Traditions are man-made concepts, shaped on the basis of what people of some era thought were right and good, and it is the humans who have the ability and responsibility to change them to match the present and the future. We and our future generations are the agents of change. The Sinhala and Tamil New Year comes and goes, and almost every year, we do what we have been doing so far. The sad reality is that all the enthusiasm that begins with the idea of entering a new year ebbs away faster than it comes. Sri Lanka, after years of perpetual chaos triggered by war, economic recession, political instability, debts, environmental degradation, and the overall collapse of ethnic harmony, is now at a decisive juncture where a real change is needed, and let us spark that change by paving the way for our future generations to create a fresh, proud tradition that truly contributes to the progress of the country and society. In fact, we have celebrated more than enough New Years to understand that sweets and New Year rituals are not going to make any real difference. In order to achieve a real change that did not take place so far, on this New Year, let us quit the culture of seeking a guiding star to follow, and pave the way for new traditions that reward new and progressive ideas, while protecting the good values that were part of the old ways. Let us also bring to an end the nefarious culture which suppressed free thinking, and free thinking men and women. Continuing to boast about a “2500 year old history” as a matter of fact is a reason to be ashamed of, and it denotes that Sri Lanka has nothing to be proud of apart from what our forefathers achieved. It is true that as a nation Sri Lanka has lost more than it achieved after gaining Independence in 1948, and it is also true that the rulers who governed the country were largely responsible for it. However, it is high time for the people to come to terms with the uncomfortable truth that they too are responsible for what has become of Sri Lanka. On the one hand, it is the people who elected the rulers, and on the other hand, the people have conveniently forgotten the concept of “civic responsibility” which goes beyond the responsibility of using their franchise to elect their representatives. This is one of the many points that emphasises the importance of the people understanding their responsibility to change the traditions and cultures that do not resonate with the present and also the future for that matter. If the sole achievement of our generation is to pass on to the next generation what was given to us by our previous generations, that is nothing but a disgraceful characteristic of a nation that has achieved so much in the past. After all, a new year would be a new year only if the people started thinking new, and it will not mean anything unless and until we renew our ways of life. Like we always do, in this New Year, remind yourself and teach your children as to how our traditions and cultures made Sri Lanka a graceful nation; however, do not forget to fulfill your duties as a citizen by reiterating what needs to be changed for the country to move forward from where it has been stuck for decades. Apart from oily sweets and bits and pieces of a culture that once made the country proud, what else are we going to give our future generations on this New Year?
