A total 35 candidates have handed over nominations

A total of 35 candidates have handed over nomination papers for the presidential elections, the Elections Commission confirmed. 6 out of the 41 candidates who placed their deposits for the presidential polls did not hand in nominations today. The former Speaker of Parliament, Chamal Rajapaksa elder brother of SLPP candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa stepped down from the presidential race even though he placed a cash deposit last week to contest the elections. Meanwhile, Attorney Rajitha Kodithuwakku, spokesman for Kumara Welgama, confirmed that Welgama will not contest the presidential election. Sirithunga Jayasuriya, Jayantha Liyanage, Maheepala Herath and Gunapala Tissakuttiarachchi were amoung the other candidates who did not handover nominations today.
