Above 100 mm rains: In over six provinces

26 May 2020

The Department of Meteorology Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre yesterday (25) issued an Amber alert suggesting that heavy rainfall can be expected over six provinces throughout this week. Due to the low-level atmospheric disturbance in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, prevailing showery conditions would get enhanced over the island during the next few days, particularly 26-29 May. Heavy rainfall above 100 mm can be expected at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, North Western, and Uva Provinces. Residents in areas identified as potential risk zones for landslides and flooding are requested to be vigilant, as continuous rainfall could prompt flash floods, cutting failures, and landslides. The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) meanwhile, requested the general public to co-operate during evacuation and relocation procedures, as additional health guidelines are in place with the Covid-19 virus still posing a threat to all citizens. “Our rapid response units have been instructed to carry out early evacuation procedures to ensure that necessary steps are taken to prevent the spread of Covid-19 whilst dispatching relief efforts. We also urge that families who live in areas of potential flood and landslide risks be prepared to evacuate on short notice. “Ensure that you have your emergency evacuation kit which should include all your important legal documents, prescription medication, and other essentials ready,” DMC Spokesperson and Assistant Director Pradeep Kodippili noted.
