Adhering to Covid-19 health guidelines: Police to closely monitor public

  • President urges heads of state and private institutions to take responsibility
By Sarah Hannan  In the wake of a possible second wave of Covid-19 spreading among the community, the Police had deployed special units in several areas yesterday (15), and were making public announcements through a mobile PA (public address) system to remind the public of the importance of following health guidelines. “With several cases being reported in various cities of the country, we deployed our units to areas where there is heavy footfall of the public during rush hours last morning. The units were required to ensure that the public was following the health guidelines, and anyone not adhering to the guidelines were to be reminded of the same,” the Police Media Unit told The Morning. In addition, the Community Service Unit of the Police was also seen making public announcements in the suburbs of Colombo to remind the public of the possibility of Covid-19 spreading and the importance of the public following the basic health guidelines. On Tuesday (14), just a week after the Kandakadu cluster was activated, President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that the heads of both government and private entities are accountable to adhere to the health guidelines in their organisations in the wake of the current spike in Covid-19 cases. He also emphasised the immediate necessity of continuing easily accessible tests related to clusters of people. He noted that although day-to-day life has returned to normalcy, precautionary measures should not be relaxed as there is heavy potential of Covid-19 spreading in the community, following the activation of the Kandakadu cluster. President Rajapaksa highlighted the importance of carrying out simple tests such as regular body temperature checks in rehabilitation centres, prisons, universities, schools, and similar places. “Wearing face masks, washing hands, and maintaining social distance are vital under this situation. If you suffer from fever and ailments related to the throat, you should refrain from mingling with crowds. Simple practices like these would make a difference in combating Covid-19,” the President added.
