Adverse weather: Ratnapura District worst affected

The inclement weather caused by super cyclone Amphan affected a total of 18,430 persons from 4,758 families in 10 districts on Tuesday (19). Three districts, namely Ratnapura, Nuwara Eliya, and Galle, were affected by the floods, while other six districts experienced heavy rains coupled with high winds, landslides, and cutting failures, the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) recorded in their situation report for 19 May. “The entire district of Ratnapura saw 15,269 persons affected by the floods and landslides which occurred within the day, prompting the relocation of 849 persons into 16 safe locations appointed by the respective Divisional Secretariat, while another 728 persons sorted shelter with their relatives. A total of three deaths were reported with two caused by cutting failures and one caused by a capsized boat (a person who went to observe the floods in a boat had been the victim),” DMC Assistant Director and Media Spokesperson Pradeep Kodippili said. According to the DMC, in all 10 districts a total of 11 houses had been fully damaged due to floods, landslides, and high winds, with 1,123 more houses sustaining partial damages. 885 persons are housed at 17 safe locations appointed by the respective divisional secretariats, while 1,942 persons sorted shelter with their relatives. The public is requested to contact the DMC Call Centre on 117 to inform about any weather-related disasters in their areas.
