With the resumption of schools nearing, Medical experts have advised teachers on how to proceed from a psychological perspective. Speaking at a media brief held yesterday (18), Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist Dr Darshani Hettiarachchi stated that teachers must not have many expectations from students when schools start. "Teachers should have realistic expectations. Most teachers believe that they provided education to children online to the maximum, and that is true, but if the teachers expect the children to have grasped all that is taught, and if the children haven't, then the teachers tend to be disappointed and under pressure," said Dr Hettiarachchi. She further went on to say that if the child senses this pressure from the teachers, they tend to be pressurised themselves. "We must keep in mind that children return back to school with many issues such as socio-economic pressures, some would have been abused, some would have lost loved ones and would have not been able to have adequate education for two years," Dr Hettiarachchi said. Dr Hettiarachchi went on to say that after the second covid wave, many children had arrived to the clinic with various issues where they have been scolded for not properly doing their school work, been threatened and had been psychologically affected due to the trauma.
