Afghan envoy disappointed over one sided relations with SL

02 Sep 2021

Despite the efforts of Afghanistan’s ambassador to Sri Lanka Ashraf Haidari which sought to build a bridge between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, Haidari disappointedly noted that no such efforts have been made from Sri Lanka’s part. He was responding to a question raised by a journalist about what Afghanistan gained from Sri Lanka, having been a country that came from war to peace, in an interview which was widely circulated on social media. Haidari explained that he has tried on numerous occasions to engage Sri Lanka and Afghanistan both economically and commercially on many areas of corporation, and considers himself to be the only ambassador in Sri Lanka who has managed to sign MoUs despite the eventful last few years Sri Lanka has faced with the Easter Attacks and the Covid-19 Pandemic. However, he goes on to note that Sri Lanka has been very reluctant to engage in countries like Afghanistan, even when it comes to granting tourist visas to Afghanis. “In any bi-lateral relationship, both countries need to have citizens commuting between the counties, whereas Afghanis are unable to secure a tourist visa to Sri Lanka despite having all documentation in place,” he stated.
