Aflatoxins in coconut oil: Customs awaits CID report to re-export

19 Apr 2021

  • Stocks of Ali Brothers and Edirisinghe Edible Oils remain

  • Katana Refineries completes re-exportation

Sri Lanka Customs is awaiting a report from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in order to re-export the remaining stocks of carcinogenic coconut oil, according to Customs Director General Maj. Gen. Vijitha Ravipriya. “We are waiting for the CID report to make a decision on re-exporting,” he said to The Morning yesterday (18), adding that the remaining coconut oil stocks belong to Ali Brothers Ltd. and Edirisinghe Edible Oils. Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Standards Institute (SLSI) previously said it has not authorised the sale of carcinogenic coconut oil imported to the country by three importers, namely Ali Brothers Ltd., Edirisinghe Edible Oils, and Katana Refineries. Ali Brothers had brought down a total of 1,513.7 metric tonnes of carcinogenic coconut oils in four containers and Edirisinghe Edible Oils had imported 230 metric tonnes of coconut oil contained in three containers. Katana Refineries, one of the three importers whose oil stocks were found to contain excessive amounts of carcinogenic aflatoxins, has re-exported its entire 105 metric tonnes of unrefined coconut oil back to Malaysia via the “Barbara” vessel from the Colombo Port’s South Asia Gateway Terminals (SAGT) Terminal on 12 April. The consignment of coconut oil was taken from the importer’s private warehouse on 6 April to the SAGT Terminal under the supervision of Customs officials. Customs informed the importers of coconut oil to re-export their stock after a second round of tests by the SLSI found samples of the consignment to be unfit for consumption. The second round of testing was requested by importers, after Customs ordered them to re-export based on the first SLSI report. According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), aflatoxins are a poisonous substance produced by certain kinds of fungi (mould) found naturally all over the world. Aflatoxins can contaminate food crops and pose a serious health threat to humans and livestock, the WHO stated. All attempts to contact Police Media Spokesman Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Ajith Rohana for comment yesterday proved futile.
