AG advises Speaker to act on Vijayakala under standing orders

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya will make an announcement on Jaffna District UNP MP Vijayakala Maheswaran’s case at the next sitting date of Parliament on Thursday (23), officials told The Morning.

The Attorney General’s Department has advised Speaker Karu Jayasuriya to take action on Maheswaran, under the current standing orders of parliament, if necessary, or to let the House decide the procedure to take action against her.

Maheswaran had recently said at a public event in Jaffna that there was a need for the LTTE to be in control of the North and East once again.

She is currently under investigation by the Police Organised Crime prevention Division after the national organiser of Sinhala Ravaya Magalkande Sudantha lodged a complaint with regard to her speech.

Last week, the Police said that 59 statements had been recorded with regard to the speech, including from six ministers and MPs, 14 government officials and 30 media personnel who were present at the speech in Jaffna last month.

A report by the Organised Crime Prevention Division was submitted to the AG’s Department and an officer told The Morning the AG’s Department was willing to take action against Maheswaran in accordance with the report.
