AG confirms ‘no-objection’ to granting bail for Muslim poet

08 Dec 2021

Deputy Solicitor General (DSG) Nerin Pulle PC had informed the Supreme Court yesterday (8) that the indictment has been filed against poet and teacher Ahnaf Jazeem in the Puttalam High Court (HC), and that the Attorney General (AG) is not objecting to bail being granted for Ahnaf when the case is called on the 15 December in Puttalam HC, Jazeem’s lawyers told The Morning. This had been informed to the court by the DSG when the fundamental rights case filed in defence of Jazeem was taken up for support for leave to proceed yesterday in the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka before a bench constituting Justices S. Thurairaja PC, Kumuduni Wickremasinghe, and Arjuna Obesekera. Senior Counsel for Jazeem had stated to court that he is ready to support the matter but that he would do it on a later date after bail is considered to Jazeem, given that the AG does not object to him being granted bail. The court had recorded the fact that the AG is not objecting to bail being granted to Jazeem by the HC when the case is called on the 15 December and had ordered that, if there is any issue in this regard, the petitioner is entitled to file a motion. Thus the case was fixed for support on the 8 March 2022 for leave to proceed and interim reliefs. In granting this date, the court considered the fact that there will not be an urgency to support the matter in the event Jazeem is granted bail by the High Court. President’s Counsel Dr. K.Kanag Isvaran PC appeared for the petitioner with Attorneys-at-Law A.A.M. Illiyas PC, Lakshmanan Jeyakumar, Sanjaya Wilson Jayasekera, Swasthika Arulingam, and Tharindu Rathnayaka, as instructed by Attorney-at-Law S. Dev Devapalan.
