AG Rajaratnam discusses X-Press Pearl proceedings

Attorney General Sanjaya Rajaratnam chaired a special discussion today (30) with regard to the next steps that need to be taken, following the inferno which took place on board the MV X-Press Pearl. Navy Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenna who was also present stated that as of now, there is no risk of the ship sinking or leaking oil. Chairman of the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA) Darshani Lahandapura was also present at the discussion. MEPA had earlier lodged a complaint with the Colombo Port Police regarding the environmental damages caused by MV X-Press Pearl. This was followed by the collection of sea water samples, which have now been referred to Government Analysts. According to Police Media Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana, a special police team will obtain statements from the ship’s crew tomorrow (31).
