Agrarian centers to be modernized, Rs. 800 mn allocated for development

The government is in the process of initiating a programme through Agrarian Centers to develop a methodology for farmers to acquire self-knowledge about their crops through the use of technological tools, stated D.B. Herath, Minister of State for Livestock, Farm Promotion and Dairy and Egg Related Industries. He further stated that Rs. 800 million has been allocated for the development of Agrarian Service Centers. Under the guidance of the Minister of Agriculture, Mahindananda Aluthgamage, the construction of new buildings for each Agrarian Service Center, the provision of office equipment as well as the computerization of each center are to be arranged. The Minister of State said that steps will be taken to provide a unit of agricultural machinery including machinery and soil testing equipment to each center so that farmers can obtain those machines to obtain their services at affordable prices as required. “Following the modernization of these centers, identification of suitable crops for each area, identification of fertilizers and quantities to be applied to the crop according to the soil density,” he stated. The Minister of State said that the technical equipment to be installed at these centers would enable the farmer to conduct self-study on the methods of obtaining and thereby increase the potential for producing agri-entrepreneurs with a good economy. This was stated by Minister of State D.B. Herath at the inauguration ceremony of the modernization of Agrarian Service Centers in Galigamuwa, Ambanpola, Rambe, Thambutta, Ehetuwewa, Morogollagama, Mahananneriya and Rajangana left bank areas in the Kurunegala District. The event was organized by the Climate Friendly Project and was attended by the Director of the project O. P. Kithsiri, Agrarian Services Officers and a group of farmers.
