Airport reopening | Delayed by repatriation

23 Aug 2020

By Skandha Gunasekara The Government’s plan to reopen Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) early next month has been postponed in order to conclude the repatriation process. Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Chairman Major General (Retd.) G.A. Chandarasiri told The Sunday Morning on Friday (21) that the most recent discussion with stakeholders resulted in a decision to give priority to the repatriation process. He said that a date for the reopening of the airport has therefore not been scheduled. “It depends on the Foreign Ministry and the Ministry of Health. They have to get all the people down to Sri Lanka first. They have to work out a flight plan. If the flight plan can be concluded in one month and there are no Covid-19 patients, then we can reopen the airport. There are 56,000-odd Sri Lankans to be repatriated.” However, earlier last week, Maj. Gen. Chandrasiri told The Sunday Morning that authorities hoped to reopen the airport within the first or second week of September.
