Airports closed for arrivals with few exceptions

By Dinitha Rathnayake   With certain limited exceptions, all international airports in Sri Lanka will not permit any passenger to disembark in Sri Lanka with effect from tomorrow (21) until 31 May 2021. The Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka (CAA) said in a statement that this decision was taken with a view to control the Covid-19 pandemic situation in the country. However, aircraft departing with passengers originating from the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) and the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport (MRIA) will be permitted. Furthermore, emergency aircraft diversions to both airports, freight operations, and humanitarian flights would also be allowed. Accordingly, technical landings, inbound ferry flights, and passengers transiting for less than 12 hours with a confirmed ticket destined to an onward destination would be permitted as well. All airlines have been strictly instructed to follow the above instructions. Meanwhile, the Air India passenger flight 273 from Chennai arrived with a group of Indian officials yesterday (19), which caused a controversy since passengers from India are not allowed to disembark in Sri Lanka. A number of flights from India landed at the BIA over the past few days and officials insisted that the flights were cargo flights. Meanwhile, it was reported that the arrival of Indian officials in Sri Lanka was permitted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. When contacted, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that they would reveal details regarding the incident in the coming days. Sri Lanka is on alert for an Indian variant of the coronavirus (a single patient with the Indian strain has been detected in the country already) and temporarily banned travellers from India with effect from 6 May.
