Sri Lanka Scuba Divers’ Association requests to lift prohibitions on night diving

22 Feb 2021

The representatives of the  Sri Lanka Scuba Divers’ Association requested the Minister of Fisheries to take necessary steps to lift the prohibitions imposed on night divers. It has been pointed out that sea urchins, lobsters and boarfish are usually found only at night and that night diving is required to catch them. The representatives said it impossible for them to engage in the industry due to the laws imposed on them. A special discussion was held yesterday with the Minister of Fisheries, Douglas Devananda, and the representatives of the Association at the Fisheries Ministry Auditorium. It was pointed out that the divers earn an income of Rs. 20,000 per kilo of sea leeches and around Rs. 8,000 per kilo of lobsters and due to the laws imposed, they will lose their income status and foreign exchange flowing into the country. Former Fisheries Minister P. Harrison in a special gazette notification dated March 22, 2019, prohibited night diving saying it was done to prevent large-scale destruction of marine resources due to the large number of Indian trawlers fishing in Sri Lankan waters. He had pointed out that despite the imposition of such laws, the illegal fishing activities carried out by Indian divers could not be stopped and it only resulted in the loss of income of Sri Lankan divers.
