All day power cuts in the coming weeks: Fuel, Power and Ports TU

17 Jan 2022

The generation of Hydro-power has dropped by over 20% and over 60% of power is generated through diesel now, therefore Sri Lanka will be left in darkness not just for few hours a day but for most of the day, said United Fuel, Ports and Power Trade Union Federation convener Ananda Palitha. He made this statement during a media brief yesterday (16). "In the coming weeks, the power wont just last for few hours a day, but for most of the day. We won't be able to prevent more than 50% of the factories from closing," said Palitha. He further added that through the Indian credit facility, the quality of imported fuel would depreciate. "India uses Octane 91, unlike us who use Octane 92. Octane 91 is compatible with Indian vehicles only, but not with Sri Lankan vehicles," he concluded. Meanwhile, Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Chandima Weerakkody said importing substandard quality fuel is not the solution and that it would only cause further long standing damage. "The Government must understand that importing substandard fuel and goods will only cause another long-term problem in the country," he said.
