All grades in government/semi-government schools reopen Monday

16 Nov 2021

BY Buddhika Samaraweera The Education Ministry has decided to reopen all the remaining grades in government and semi-government schools islandwide on 22 November, the Ministry stated.  Speaking in Parliament on 15 November, Education Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said that in addition to the classes of primary grades and Grades 10 and 11 (General Certificate of Education [GCE] Ordinary Level [O/L]), and 12 and 13 (GCE Advanced Level [A/L]) classes), which are currently open in schools, all other Grades (Six, Seven, Eight, and Nine) will be opened next week. Accordingly, the Education Ministry yesterday stated that during a discussion, which was attended by Education Ministry Secretary Prof. Kapila Perera and other officials, it was decided to reopen the said grades on 22 November. Schools islandwide had been closed for several months due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation and the lockdown status imposed in the country. However, the Education Ministry took steps to open schools in a few stages after the Government decided to lift the lockdown on 1 October. Initially, the Education Ministry took steps to reopen a total of 3,000 schools from 21 October, under the programme to reopen primary sections in schools coming under the purview of provincial councils (PCs) and with less than 200 students. Furthermore, the Education Ministry reopened the primary sections of all schools from 25 October, while Grades 10, 11, 12, and 13 were reopened on 8 November.
