All Mental Health Institute patients partially vaccinated

21 Jul 2021

By Pamodi Waravita  Nearly all of the approximately 650 patients receiving long-term care at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) have been partially vaccinated against the Covid-19 virus, with the NIMH having also requested vaccine stocks for those who require repeated admission to care facilities at said hospital, The Morning learnt. “Most of the 650 patients receiving long-term care facilities have received their first dose of a Covid-19 vaccine. For those patients who are evaluated by psychiatrists as being unable to give consent to obtaining a vaccine, they are vaccinated under the provisions of the Mental Diseases Ordinance, after the psychiatrists determine that it is in their best interests to do so,” NIMH Consultant Psychiatrist Dr. Pushpa Ranasinghe told The Morning. Since the NIMH has evaluated that patients who require repeated admissions to the hospital are at risk of carrying the virus inside the hospital premises, the NIMH has also requested vaccine stocks for administration to those patients as well. Dr. Ranasinghe further explained that the NIMH has taken measures to create two Covid-19 isolation wards, for males and females separately, which are to be utilised if a long-term care patient tests positive for the virus. “We also follow a strict procedure when a patient is admitted to the hospital. We conduct a PCR test and then isolate the patient for 48 hours until the results are obtained. Afterwards, we do not allow them to mix with the other patients until seven days have passed,” noted Dr. Ranasinghe. The country is currently facing a fourth wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, with the highly transmissible Indian Delta (B.1.617.2) variant rapidly spreading through five Districts in three Provinces. On Tuesday (20), 1,487 new patients were identified and 43 deaths were reported as a result of the virus.
