President Gotabaya Rajapaksa said today that allowing the villagers to use their traditional farmlands uninterrupted does not mean that it is a permission given to destroy forests.
Speaking at this week's Gama Samaga Pilisandarak held at Karuwalagaswewa, he said some of the things he has said at these programmes have been misinterpreted.
"At almost all the place I visited I spoke about land issues. Most of the time, the traditional farmlands have been obstructed when marking boundaries by the wildlife officials. As a policy, we discussed and said permission should be given to the villagers to use these traditional lands. That's not a permission given to clear forests. If a forest is being destroyed, the officials should immediately stop it.
