The high-rise Altair apartment complex is scheduled for a soft opening in the middle of February, following a delay of approximately three-and-a-half years, The Morning learnt.
“Following discussions at the end of January, it has been decided that Altair would have a soft opening in mid-February,” Special Authorised Officer for the completion of the Altair and former Urban Development Authority (UDA) Chairman Nimal Perera told The Morning yesterday (31 January).
Construction of the iconic building located close to the Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo city was halted for months before its recommencement in July 2020, due to the intervention of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa.
Perera added that the completion and grand opening of the Altair is due to happen in April 2021 and that up to now, approximately 287 apartments have been sold out of the available 400.
Altair's construction, which was due to be completed in 2017, was delayed due to complications that arose between shareholders, before the President’s intervention.
“I was appointed to continue the work of the complex last July after His Excellency got involved in the matter due to the amount of public interest in the project. Some owners of the apartments had even paid up to 100% of the cost and were expecting the speedy completion of the units,” said Perera.
The Altair, designed by award-winning, world renowned architect Moshe Safdie stands unique in the Colombo skyline since its structure consists of a straight 68-storey vertical tower and a 63-storey sloping tower, with 400 apartments and 45% of the total space allocated for public areas.
It was the first project approved by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa during his tenure as the Secretary of the Ministry of Urban Development under the Special Development Projects Act.
